Education

The scientific qualification and training of the next generation of quantum experts in natural and computer sciences as well as engineering are an essential part of the MQV activities and complement the scientific and technological initiatives. This includes the recruitment of top researchers and developers, the training and re-education of skilled employees in industry as well as targeted outreach activities to engage with the public on the opportunities of the scientific and technological revolution in the field of quantum science and technology.

With education opportunities, ranging from high school courses and programs for professionals to university levels, the MQV will build a quantum workforce and train a new generation of quantum natives.

In close cooperation with the students laboratory PhotonLab of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, MQV develops new concepts and materials to teach quantum technology to pupils and organizes regular teacher training courses to establish quantum-computing know-how already on a high-school level. Outreach activities for the public will also establish a broad understanding of quantum technologies and its benefits for society.

Doctoral fellowships

In an annual international competition MQV awards outstanding young researchers with (highly prestigious) doctoral fellowships.The MQV doctoral fellows selected through this competition receive a three-year ad personam fellowship – they can join any research group working at any Bavarian university. They have to find mentors willing to supervise their PhD research themselves; being fully funded for three years, they will be welcome in many groups. They then join the graduate program with which their host group is associated.

Fields of research covered by MQV include a diverse array of topics as far as they are related towards the overarching goal of building and exploiting quantum computers: atomic physics and quantum optics, solid-state physics and material science, quantum information theory, quantum many-body systems, as well as aspects of both electrical engineering and computer science (programming languages, software for quantum computing, execution environments, design automation, computer architecture).

The highly selective MQV Fellowship competition envisages awarding five fellowships per year. However, during the competition candidates will also be screened by individual Bavarian research groups seeking to fill PhD positions funded via other channels (e.g., Bavarian, federal or European funding schemes). Such groups will be able to screen the list of applicants themselves, attend their talks online, identify highly qualified candidates and recruit them to their own PhD positions. Thus, the number of applicants finding PhD positions is potentially much larger than the number of available MQV doctoral fellowships.

MQV doctoral fellows and other doctoral students associated with MQV-related groups will benefit from the existing graduate programs at their respective universities or research institutions. In addition, they will be able to participate in some of the QST summer schools and workshops organized by MQV partners, such as the two International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) associated with MQV, on Quantum Science and Technology (link: IMPRS-QST ) in Munich and on the Physics of Light (link: IMPRS-PL ) in Erlangen.

Master course

Quantum Science & Technology is a broad, interdisciplinary field of contemporary science spanning a wide range of scientific areas with a high potential for the development of future information, sensing and computing technologies. Major research thrusts are, for example, Quantum Computing, Quantum Sensing, Quantum Simulation, Quantum Materials and Quantum Cryptography to name but a few. The research field is firmly grounded on the basic understanding of the principles of quantum mechanics, but also relies on developments in neighboring research areas such as mathematics, information technology, electrical engineering and chemistry. It is for this reason that the two Munich universities – Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Technical University of Munich – have joined their forces to establish the interdisciplinary Master’s study program “Quantum Science & Technology“ (QST). Students particularly benefit from the research environment provided by the Excellence cluster Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST) .

For schools

The MQV aims to bring quantum technologies to a young audience, mainly high-school and university students, through innovative ways. We will provide a broad range of tools, from print to online class-room materials, to YouTube and social-media content targeting various age groups and levels of experience.
