Open Doors with the Munich Quantum Valley at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics

Opening the doors for young and old is the motto on 3 October 2023 at the Garching research campus. The Munich Quantum Valley (MQV), the Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST) and the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics (MPQ) jointly invite to get to know the world of quantum (optics) with a colorful program.

"How do quanta get into computers?" is just one of many questions that visitors young and old can get to the bottom of at the MPQ in Garching on 3 October. Exciting lectures, guided tours through real quantum optical laboratories and hands-on experiments will make the abstract research of light and matter tangible. Munich Quantum Valley will be present with a booth and provide information about technologies and research in the field of quantum computing.

Diverse program for young and old

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., children ages 7 and up can attend the Maus-Türöffnertag, the nationwide action day of the "Sendung mit der Maus". Here, a live reading of the children's radio play "Alice in Quantum Land", experiments by the PhotonLab and the Munich school laboratories, ice cream with liquid nitrogen and much more are on the agenda.

From noon to 5 p.m., the open house officially follows for everyone 14 and older. Throughout the day, however, people of all ages are welcome to learn more about quantum science and quantum computing. "Hands-on quantum physics" promises the quantum suitcase workshop, for example, and a demonstration of quantum optical laboratory techniques will show how to trap atoms and use them for quantum computing. In workshop and laboratory tours, visitors can see how scientific progress is being worked on day by day.

At the Munich Quantum Valley booth, anyone interested can find out what quantum computers actually are, how they work and what they could be used for in the future. Components of a real quantum computer make the abstract topic tangible.
