OHB System AG Oberpfaffenhofen – Design and Implementation of High-performance FPGA-based Processing Algorithms for Secure Random Number Generation in Quantum Communications (m/f/d)

published since:

Satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD) offers a paradigm-changing solution to the key distribution problem, enabling a new way of provably secure communication, especially over long distances. In this context, cryptographically secure random number generators are an essential building block of secure systems.

Within this internship, a High-performance FPGA-based Processing Algorithms for Secure Random Number Generation in Quantum Communications shall be designed and implemented to exploit advantages of quantum-based random number generation and to support its implementation in space-borne applications.”

A member of the listed technology group OHB SE, OHB System AG is one of the Top 3 European space companies. Around 2,300 employees work on some of the most important aviation and space programs of our times in Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and Sweden. These include low-orbiting and geostationary satellites for earth observation, navigation, telecommunications, science, space exploration and quantum cryptography.

Your tasks will be:

  • Literature research and understanding of ITS secure processing and provision of random numbers especially in the quantum communication context
  • Solution oriented working bringing in line requirements, hardware and software for the FPGA-based processing
  • Design, implementation and test of algorithms directly on FPGA hardware with VHDL/Verilog and common SKDs
  • Conduct statistical tests to verify the quality of random numbers
  • Active participation in space-based missions to secure European data communications

Your skills are:

  • Student in computer science, electrical engineering, physics or similar fields
  • Practical experience in FPGA-based programming, testing and debugging
  • Practical experience with VHDL/Verilog and common SDKs
  • Familiar with statistical methods, ideally in the context of randomness
  • High motivation, proactive working approach and strong sense of responsibility
