Fraunhofer IKS – Master Thesis in Quantum Error Mitigation

published since:

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

Safe Intelligence - this forms the core brand of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS. Connected cognitive systems drive innovation in many sectors, including mobility, healthcare, and automation in industry. Disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing play a key role here. Fraunhofer IKS is conducting research to ensure that these applications are reliable and verifiably safe. We consider resilience and intelligence to be part of the same process.

What you will do

Quantum Computing is a novel, disruptive technology with the potential to speed up or to enable the solution of a variety of problems. An essential building block in a future success of quantum computing is the treatment of errors and decoherence that unavoidably occur in quantum devices. You will research the utilization of current error mitigation methods. Thereby, the applications of quantum computing that this group is working on is diverse, ranging from various machine learning methods over optimization problems to quantum chemistry.

Possible topics include the adaptation of error mitigation techniques to the particular properties of a quantum device or the investigation of the suitability of different mitigation methods for a certain application of quantum computing.

What you bring to the table

  • the formal requirements for a master thesis in physics, computer science or an adjacent subject
  • basic knowledge in quantum computing
  • programming skills (preferably Python, Qiskit or Pennylane)
  • experience with working in Linux environments
  • interest in applied research and the transfer of state-of-the-art methods to relevant applications.

What you can expect

  • good and individual supervision, a positive working environment and flexible work model
  • close integration into a dynamic team working in various innovative quantum-related fields
  • application-driven extension of your studies.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
