Join the founding team developing the connectivity layer for future quantum technologies — at the intersection of quantum optics, hardware engineering and scalable infrastructure.
Photonics Engineer — Photonic Interface & Interferometry
You build the node's photonic interface: the optics that collect single photons from the cavity and route them over telecom fiber, and the stable interferometers that measure their entanglement.
Responsibilities
- Design and build photon collection, fiber coupling and routing in a compact form factor
- Design and build interferometers for Bell-state measurement and two-photon interference that stay stable over hours of operation
- Engineer their stability, both passive (thermal, mechanical, polarisation) and active (phase and path-length locking, feedback loop design)
- Integrate and calibrate single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) and telecom components
- Contribute to the laser systems: beam delivery, modulator lines, frequency stabilisation
- Track loss, noise and drift budgets from atom to fiber
Requirements
- PhD with relevant experience, in photonics, quantum optics or AMO physics
- Hands-on experience building stable interferometers and single-photon or low-light setups
- Solid grounding in feedback control: loop design, noise analysis and locking techniques
- Fiber optics and precise optical alignment
Nice to have
- Fiber-based or polarisation-stabilised interferometers
- Hands-on experience with optical design software (e.g. Zemax)
- SNSPDs and time-correlated photon counting
- Optomechanical design of compact, robust setups (CAD)
What we offer
- A founding-team role with real ownership of a first-of-its-kind machine
- A new quantum-optics lab in the Munich area
- Competitive salary and employee equity (VSOP)
- Close ties to the European quantum ecosystem; conference and training budget
- English as working language
